Laura Severns is the senior research assistant at the Literacy Institute where she conducts research-based assessments of reading and language skills to evaluate preschool educational programs in the Richmond area. Laura earned her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Teaching degrees from the University of Virginia in 1996 and has also completed graduate work in educational administration. Laura taught middle school special education in Louisa County, Virginia and then in Fairfax County, Virginia. She also worked as a Special Education Coach in Fairfax County facilitating inclusion, team-teaching and mentoring special education teachers at the middle school level. After working with students with disabilities in the public school system for over seven years, Laura has been with The Literacy Institute and Virginia Literacy Foundation for two years working in data collection and analysis for the Early Reading First grants and NoRF grant.
