
Barbara E. Gibson has served as Associate Director of The Literacy Institute at Virginia Commonwealth University since July 2003. During that time she has also managed the Virginia Adult Learning Resource Center, a division of the Institute. Prior to filling these positions, she was Associate Director of both the Virginia Literacy Foundation and the Workforce Improvement Network, a former partnership between the Foundation and James Madison University. Ms. Gibson has over 30 years of nonprofit and governmental management experience. She has conducted training and made presentations nationally and internationally on such topics as services marketing, strategic planning, nonprofit management, and adult literacy programming. Ms. Gibson holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Masters of Liberal Arts from the University of Richmond. She has completed numerous post-graduate courses in adult education, marketing, management, and psychology.
Ms. Gibson participates in a variety of community and professional activities. She has been a member of the Richmond Public Library Foundation Board since 1997, serving as the board’s president in 2003-04. She has been a member of the WCVE public television Community Advisory Board since 1996, and was its chair in 1997-98. She is also currently a member of the Capital Area Workforce Investment Board, LINCS Workplace Education Core Knowledge Group, the Southern LINCS Partner Advisory Committee, and the Virginia Association for Adult and Continuing Education.
